Wonder Pets

M. Small has been through all different phases of videos and TV shows for kids (with strictly enforced limits, of course). He started out with Baby Einstein, then Dora and Blue's Clues, then Curious Buddies, leavened by the Wiggles and Kipper for a little international flavor, before graduating to Pixar and the NASA Channel. But he's into something new now, and I thought I should mention it to other parents. Warn them, as it were.

It's called Wonder Pets. The themes are, as always, harmless enough: the importance of teamwork, friendship, and helping others. But the adventures of a classroom-based trio made up of a guinea pig, a turtle, and a duckling has a couple of strikes against it.

One is the animation. The characters appear to have been cut out of magazines and pasted into the frame, a visual technique that makes the viewer long for the photorealistic richness of South Park. It's like watching an animated ransom note.

The other is the music. You know how kids' shows all have theme songs that burrow into your head and won't leave? Well, each Wonder Pets is a mini-operetta, which means that it's possible to get entire episodes stuck in your head. I have one on endless loop in my forebrain, which is why I chose it as a topic for this post.

Well, that and to warn you all. It's too late for me, but heed my words of caution: venture into the Wonder Pets' classroom at your own risk.
