When Good Schedules Go Bad

Alright, so with the visitation we had set for this week with the boys, we knew that we would be driving back this evening to take them as an extended weekend to their hometown for my oldest son’s baseball game. Now, we make the 2 hour jaunt pretty much 2 times a week, so the question of getting there on time wasn’t an issue. We knew that with the time he was supposed to be at the game for warm-ups what time we had to leave according to the schedule we had.

However, about 40 minutes away from the game, we get a call from my ex-wife wanting to know where Caleb was for the game that was about to start in a few minutes. Freaking out, my wife basically decided to go into mach 3 mode and almost killed us twice going through curves with reckless abandon trying to get this poor kid to a little league game where he would more than likely miss at least the first couple of innings as it stood. We had gone by a schedule of a 7:00 game that we received as an email from my ex-wife at the beginning of the season and the “bible” that was the schedule given by the recreation department had it at 5:30.

Oops.

Now, by most accounts and predictions, you could imagine what could have transpired. Angry discussions, pointing fingers, Caleb being distraught about being late, and so on and so forth. The first conversation was a bit “short” by most accounts, but in our grand fashion, a secondary conversation happened even before we got to the ballpark and everything was all good on the relationship front and Caleb seemed the least concerned about being late—even though he is the team’s star player (pardon me while I strut around the room for a few seconds as the proud papa of the big slugger and pitcher of a 3rd place out of six team league in a town of 12,000 in Illinois).

We got there as the second inning started. Caleb still got a hit, walked, played catcher, tagged a guy out at home, and pitched a scoreless inning. His team lost by one with him stranded at third, but I don’t think that was due to us being late….although I am sure in a few hours the “what ifs” will be coming out of Caleb’s big brain on our way back home with the boys. Ahhh…the life of a ten year old and the coordination of schedules by divorced couples that seem to take on the life that most wedding planners have nightmares about….:)
