When Extroverted Children Happen to Introverted Parents

I'm generally a shy person. M. Small is generally the exact opposite. This makes for some uncomfortable moments for me at the park.

I'm such a misanthrope hermit recluse that I'd be perfectly happy if it were just the two of us there, interacting with nobody but each other. That, however, is not how he rolls. He loves to engage with as many other kids as he can, which means me engaging with their parents. Whom I'm always meeting for the first time. I don't know how it is that I haven't met every last parent in the neighborhood at this rate. It must be a ridiculously fertile area we live in or something.

Not that I'm complaining. I'm glad he isn't going to be growing up with his father's crippling social anxiety. Speaking of which, I'm sure that frequently being in the position of explaining to strangers just what the hell my son is talking about is probably good for me, too. Just another way in which being a parent forces one to grow.

Hi, wait until your kids get older...I'm a reasonably social introvert but my home has always been my sanctum...a place where others outside my immediate family are no...now we have moved to an area that has tons of kids and our two now wander in the street and play outside and so we find kids knocking on the door and/or sometimes find them inside our house....I find it tough enough to share a house with my husband and kids but know the neighbourhood kids?? panic.... unfortunately my kids are starting to complain because they are now realizing mom and dad are not as thrilled with 'drop-ins' as other parents seem to be.... I have not figured out how to handle things yet and keep fighting an urge to lock myself in my bedroom--though my husband would be there so its not much of an escape (his office is in our bedroom)....
