M. Edium finally finished up using his homemade WALL-E costume on Friday night, for neighborhood trick-or-treating. I went along, and fortunately for me he only wanted me to dress up as the Buy N Large CEO (the character played by Fred Willard in the movie). All I had to do was make a little badge with the BnL logo and tape it to the lapel of my suit. Oh, and I had to wear a suit. M. Edium was the only one who knew who I was, but I didn't care.
As it turns out, the neighborhood rounds revealed a few shortcomings of the costume. It's essentially a large cardboard box that hangs to his knees, so some of the front stoops were a little tricky for him to negotiate, especially side-by-side with his cousing Deniece in her peacock costume. After a couple of blocks, the weight of it started bothering him. Then he wanted me to put him on his shoulders, which I'm normally happy to do on long walks but which wouldn't have worked at all while he was wearing a big box. Then he got cold, which was disappointing becuase one of the best parts about the costume is that it's roomy enough for him to wear his winter coat under it, which he was. And eventually he just got tired and refused to trick-or-treat any further. He actually said to one neighbor, "I have enough candy," and while crossing the next lawn he decided he needed to rest, whereupon he "cubed up" WALL-E-style and refused to go any further for several minutes, until he tipped over and I had to help him upright.
Then when we got home, he was so exhausted that he went to sleep almost immediately.
Wait, did I say "shortcomings?"
