Toy Story

You can always count on decent entertainment from a Pixar film, but one area where it's sadly uneven are the tie-in toys.

Obviously Cars was a no-brainer. The toy-industrial complex already cranks out millions of minature vehicles every year, so it was a slam-dunk to come up with huge numbers of every character from Lightning McQueen to Fred (although I'm still waiting for Fred). I do feel bad for Sarge, who after being outed as a tiny little lead-bomb got banished to a high closet shelf while M. Edium (then M. Small) was told that Sarge was "too sick to play."

Rataouille was a little trickier. Obviously you can't put rats in a Happy Meal, and in fact the only two toys M. Edium has that are related to that movie are a Remy and an Emile who talk when you thump them. Someday I'm going to crack that Remy open and re-edit its voice loops so it spouts Patton Oswalt's KFC Famous Bowl routine.

Now comes Wall-E, which should have been another no-brainer. But after a disappointing trip to the toy store last weekend, I can only conclude that toy cars are much easier to make than toy floating robots. Granted, there are plenty of Wall-Es, but each of them only does one thing. So that's kind of a drawback.

M. Edium was more excited about his new Wall-E lunch bag than anything else. But at least we spent enough that we got a free robot arm to go along with it. While supplies last!
