Ok, before people start throwing tomatoes here, hear me out. Robin Williams' portrayal of a dad that goes through a divorce from a wife that he didn't want to leave or kids that he didn't want to be around every day is in fact, a comedy, but in the terms of fatherhood and being a good dad, it rates as number one on my scale.
It may sound hammy, but this guy did whatever it took to be around his kids, including acting like an elderly nanny with a penchant for giving her opinion whenever she felt like it. It helped him grow as a person and as a father, and ultimately towards a new career, and at the same time, his ex-wife Sally Field gained a new appreciation for the changes that he underwent. While they didn't end up back together, the relationship with him and his kids was fully intact and it was a great example of divorced dads and how they can persevere.
I understand that the chances of divorce situations ending up "good" are very low, and as I have explained in other posts, my divorce situation is unlike most--my ex-wife and I made a "pact" to always be good to each other for the sake of the boys, and the result after three years of divorce is that my wife now is great friends with her, my ex-wife has remarried, and her new blended family and ours interact quite a bit. There's no awkwardness at events, we talk just like we are around each other all the time, and we try to work out differences with the kid's best interests in mind. I'm not saying it's perfect--we have our issues and we will continue to have bumps in the road--but my point is that with this movie and Williams' undying drive to do whatever to his kids isn't all that far-fetched, and dads--whether divorced or not--should take this lead in the love they have for their children!!
