As I've mentioned before, M. Edium's favorite show is Wonder Pets. It's on Nick, Jr. and recounts the musical adventures of three classroom pets who use teamwork to save animals in trouble. There's Ming Ming the duckling, whose catchphrase is "Thiiis iiis sewious;" Tuck the turtle, an inveterate hug-slut; and their leader, Linnie, a guinea pig who somehow manages not to seem like a know-it-all despite actually knowing everything.
The other day, M. Edium came face-to-face with all three of them. We went to the Mall of America's Nickelodeon Universe. That would be the indoor park that used to be called Camp Snoopy until they re-branded everything. In the gift shop, there were good-sized plush toys of each of the Wonder Pets. M. Edium happily accepted a kiss from Ming Ming, a hug from Tuck, and some advice from Linnie (facilitated by me, of course), but didn't clamor to take any of them home. In fact, he was great about that all day. At the end of the day, when we let him choose a toy, he went with the Linnie, which kind of surprised me since I always assumed Linnie was his least favorite. You think you know a person...
When we got home (and he woke up from a three-hour power nap), M. Edium introduced Linnie to his previous favorite stuffed animal, a turtle that he had adopted weeks before. M. Edium has bonded with turtle like with few other toys, even declining to cheapen him with a name. He was simply Turtle.
Until now. In the presence of Linnie, he had magically become Tuck, the reptile member of the Wonder Pets team. I wasn't sure Turtle would consider this a promotion, a demotion, or a lateral career move.
Just for fun, I rooted around among the forgotten stuffed animals in M. Edium's toy chest to see if I could round out the team. Sure enough, there was a fuzzy yellow duck, about the same size as the other two. M. Edium was over the proverbial moon. He'd gotten all three for the price of one (20% off the price of one, in fact, thanks to a handy coupon, but then he doesn't need to know that).
We're perfectly aware that it's only a limited number of years that we're going to be able to get away with stuff like this, if not months. Kids are getting more label-conscious all the time. But my mom's going to make "Tuck" and "Ming Ming" some little Wonder Pets capes that match Linnie's, so maybe we can keep it up longer.
