Taxonomy

One of the great amusements in my life is watching A. sort out the differences between things. When she first learned to speak a few words, there was a period in time when all four-legged animals were dogs and all birds were ducks. Over time, she's learned to be more precise. She's hung up right now on the problem of gender, claiming with unusual consistency that she is, like her father, a boy because -- I dunno, because of whatever it is in her grapefruit-sized brain that causes her to enjoy being wrong.

The other, slightly less momentous taxonomy we've been working on has been the "finger food/not finger food" distinction. This morning, for instance, we spent several minutes discussing why "yummy yogurt" is best eaten with a spoon and not scooped up, like a bear fishing for salmon, with her palm. She understands that yogurt and other semi-solids are Not Finger Food, but she often announces her understanding in the midst of violating the rules. I explained to her that the time to recall that yogurt isn't finger food would be, you know, before clotting it all over her hands and face.

Of course, given what a pig she is at the table, her steadfast insistence that she's a boy might actually have some merit after all.
