Take Your Seat

At four years old, M. Edium has outgrown his car seat by any standard. Which I'm not entirely comfortable with. One of my favorite things about the whole car seat deal is that he was helpless to free himself from it. Kind of awesome on long trips, especially when he falls asleep.

Now that he's in a booster seat instead, he's quite capable of reaching down to his side and simply unclipping his seatbelt whenever he wants. So far, he hasn't done it when the car is moving. But I'm still not entirely comfortable with the fact that sometimes when I shut off the car and come around back to let him out, he's halfway there already.

However, he seems to somehow understand that seat belts stay on when the car is in motion. I'm sure that's just something he's learned from osmosis or from watching the adults he rides with, because up until now we certainly have never given him many lectures on the subject. It always took care of itself. Now I suppose he's simply old enough to get it.

I have to give props to the automotive child safety restraint industry. Not only do they mass-produce these items that protect any number of children from death or injury, they've matched the sizes of those occupying them to general developmental stages.
