Surprise

My wife likes to let M. Small do the gift shopping for the people in his life. That's not to say she gives him the keys and a credit card and sends him off to the mall by himself. But she does quiz him about what he wants to get people for their birthdays and Christmas and such. He's usually pretty good at it, too, and in those rare cases where he's not, and two of his grandmothers get model skeleton kits for their birthdays, what are you gonna do? He's three. Cut the kid some slack, fer chrissake.

The problem is getting him to understand the concept of "surprise," because he loves telling people what he got them. I think he's slowly getting better, though. At Mother's Day with my mom, he told her all about the plant with the flamingo that he'd gotten her before we'd eaten dinner. Then after dinner, he excitedly told her that he had a surprise for her. So he's starting to grasp the concept, even if he isn't quite versed on the necessary sequence of events.

He's been telling me for weeks that he's getting me an inflatable robot, even though the store he spotted it in closed months ago. So the other day my wife took him to Home Depot instead, where all the helpful employees explained to him that sorry, no, they're all out of robots. He got me something else, and long story short, today I got to use my new hose nozzle out in the yard a week early. Happy Father's Day!

Mind you, I am most definitely not complaning. I'm looking forward to late November, when I start hearing about what I'm getting for Christmas.
