Spaced Out

M. Small is currently in a space phase. I think I like it better than the heavy construction equipment phase he was in at this time last year, if only because I don't have to do as much research.

Yes, I was a space geek in grade school. In 1980 and 1981, I was one of those kids who used to get up early to watch the first shuttle launch get scrubbed. Now that M. Small has a couple of books about he space program that are way above his reading level -- if not way above his reading to level -- I'm glad that I'm able to explain stuff to him like or orbits and rocket stages and spacesuits. Still, I think he's getting a lot of this education from his day care lady.

For instance, the other day, the neighbors brought over a bunch of official NASA publicity photos. It seems her uncle had once worked for the space agency, and they came across these pictures, and thought, well who would want these? M. Small was thrilled, paging through them excitedly and recognizing items like a Satun V launch and the jumbo jet that piggybacks the orbiter sometimes. There was even a group photo of three astronauts, whom M. Small immediately identified as "John Glenn, Alan Sheperd, Wally Schirra." After he rattled off the names of three original Mercury astronauts, how could I correct him that they were in fact Apollo 13's Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise?

No matter. Soon he'll be old enough to watch Apollo 13 and The Right Stuff with me. Sure, he'll probably be in an interpretive dance phase or something by then, but I'll still be in charge.
