Privy Privacy

M. Edium is old enough to ask for privacy when he goes to the bathroom. He's just not always old enough to get it.

At home, it's fine. But while traveling last week, there were a number of places where privacy for him while he did his business was just a nonstarter. For instance, I took him to a number of very busy public bathrooms, and the one time I did give him privacy, he locked me out of the stall for several minutes and then couldn't figure out how to unlock it. Fortunately he managed to let me in before I had to slither under the divider to rescue him. I can't say I would have cared for that.

However, the worst place was on the airplane. There's nothing more ridiculous than being locked into one of the smallest rooms on earth (or off it) with another human being and he says to you, "Can I have some privacy?" But of course I wasn't about to trust him with the lock to a bathroom that was being shared by over a hundred other people who wouldn't have any other options for at least two hours.

So we compromised. I simply turned my back. Even with his kneecaps pressed agains the backs of my legs, that seemed to be all the privacy he needed right then.
