Piano Boy

Most parents have probably seen their preschool kid noodling around on a piano keyboard and wondered if they're unwittingly raising a potential prodigy. I know we have. Some of those parents already own pianos. Those with the means might get one. Those without probably won't.

We split the difference.

M. Edium loves to climb up and tickle the keys whenever he gets a chance, but as much as he enjoys that, who's to say if it'll ever develop beyond idle pounding? So my wife went on Craigslist and found a guy who was literally giving a piano away for free to anyone who could come and get it. After hiring a team of movers for less than the price of a piano bench, we are now piano owners.

M. Edium is pretty excited about it, and I think he's already improving. The other day he bashed his fist on the bottom keys several times, resulting in a barrage of low, dissonant, minor chords.

"That's a scary song," he explained.

Already the cost of the piano has paid off.
