Not Cool for School

M. Small started Montessori school last week. Every time we talk to him about it, he says he loves it there, he has fun, he's learning a lot, he likes the other kids, and he doesn't let them push him around.

Except in the morning.

I realize this is a big change for him to adapt to. He's been going to the same day care lady for literally as long as he can remember, so suddenly ("suddenly" in the sense of "with several months of adance warning) getting dropped off somewhere else three days a week is a lot to deal with. Especially when it keeps happening to him first thing in the morning, right after (and in a couple of cases, during) breakfast.

So he keeps insisting that his mom drop him off. No matter how much I tell him I'd like to do it, no matter how much I complain to him about never getting a turn, no matter how many times the previous evening I got him to agree that I could drop him off, it always has to be mom who does it.

Which is inconvenient for her, becaue the school is on the way to my work but not on the way to hers. Still, my wife drops him off, because she says he needs to deal with one trauma at a time. My argument is that the longer he relies on her to do this, the harder it's going to be for him to ever let me take over. But when the parents are deadlocked, the wailing child gets to cast the deciding vote.

On the other hand,. when we drove him to the school together yesterday, I went in with him and he ended up clinging to me and drooling chocolate onto my white dress shirt. So maybe I should just let them win this one for now.
