Non custodial parenting and time with kids

I miss the boys.

After all of the time we had and all of the miles we've logged back and forth from Indiana to Illinois, I became spoiled once again as the non-custodial parent and the time spent with the boys. But now, almost a week removed from going to Kings Island and not being able to see them until Friday, I miss the boys. A lot.

I am not being pathetic, I am not needing pity here. I just miss them. There's a line from a "Rent" song that says "Why does distance make us wise?" and it is speaking of course of a romantic relationship, but I think that holds merit in this situation. While I know I have the ability to contact the boys via phone or via email, it is almost one of those things that I know it's hard on all of us if I do that--mostly me. Plus, the boys are at that age where they are still one-word monotonic answers on the phone, so it's not really quality time per se.

This is the part of the divorce that I will always be unsettled with, the time away. It's not like I am stupid and didn't know this, in fact it was one of the hardest things to come to terms with. But it still doesn't change things.

I miss the boys.

Most people would try to take this feeling and run away or push it down. I like to savor it--it makes me feel good as a father that I do miss them and how much I do. It certainly is different than how I used to be. And that can't be bad....
