Music Appreciation

Our town is currently hosting its annual folk music festival, which is the sort of thing that I would ordinarily not attend. Though I enjoy my fair share of the genre, I would generally place "attending a week-long folk music festival" in the same category as "getting stabbed in the head with a red-hot poker." Too much of anything bores me, and -- being completely incapable of playing a note of music -- I don't look at these sorts of things as opportunities to learn new skills.

This, year, though, my daughter is old enough -- she;ll be two in a few weeks -- to enjoy and understand a little bit about music, and with my wife away on a work-related trip, I decided to spend much of the weekend at the festival. One of the things I've found about parenting is that the cliches are mostly true; I'm not sure why I would have expected otherwise, but after two days of watching my kid smile and laugh and dance to music that ranged from "pretty good" to "completely unpleasant," I can honestly say I've never had such a fantastic time as I did while watching her lose her mind over some fellow's banjo-picking. In other words, I now understand that when parents nothing gives them more joy than witnessing their own children's happiness, they're not just saying what they're supposed to say. If my daughter can make me actively seek out amateur folk music, there's probably no cliche about parenting that isn't true.
