Milestones

Our doctor checkups with M. Small always go very well for him. The doctor is always very impressed with how well he's doing. It's us parents who don't always do so well.

For instance, at his four-month checkup, the doctor asked us if he could roll over yet.

"No, he can't," we said patiently. "He's only four months old, and he was seven weeks premature." Meanwhile, M. Small rolled over on the exam table.

The doctor then asked if he could sit up.

"Oh, no," we said with wise certainty. "He's not old enough for that." So the doctor sat him up on the table, and he stayed sitting.

"Can he stand yet?" she asked. We looked at each other and said, "Yes, Yes, he can." He couldn't, though.

We thought we'd learned our lesson, until the doctor asked how he's doing with scissors. Lora was like, "Scissors? He doesn't get to play with scissors."

Well, apparently he's supposed to be by now, and has been for a year. News to us. We don't have safety scissors, though, so his mom gave him a pair of nail scissors and hovered nearby while he went to town on a couple of sheets of printer paper with a surprising amount of competence. Kind of gratifying watching your child leave up the development ladder by a year and a half in just a few minutes. Now I'm trying to figure out ways to replicate the experience in the future.
