Lower Bunk

M. Edium loves his bunk bed. For weeks, he would show it to every visitor, including visitors who had already seen it. Even though the novelty has worn off, he remains quite proud of it.

It's also handy for us. When his older cousin, our niece Deniece, comes to visit, she can sleep comfortably in the lower bunk. Trash likes to snuggle with him down there for his bedtime stories before he ascends to the upper level for the night. And so far, we've resisted the temptation to use the lower bunk as extra storage space.

But it came in super handy the other night, when he awoke from a bad dream at 4:30 in the morning. This time, I was the first one up and in there.

"Do you want to tell me about it?" I asked. He didn't. He just wanted to go to the bathroom. After I took him and brought him back to the upper bunk, I just wanted to get back to sleep.

"Can you stay for a bit?" he asked.

"Sure," I said.

"Can you stay for two and a half hours?"

I looked at the bottom bunk. I looked at the clock.

"Maybe," I said, and settled in down below. Either I would get to go back to bed soon or I would fall asleep here, in comfort. Win-win for me, really.

We talked intermittently for the next half hour, I think mainly so he could be sure I was still there.

"Are you okay down there, Dad?"

[snort…sniff…snorfle] "Yes, I'm okay. Thanks for asking."

That's where I was when Trash came and found me, after our alarms went off at seven a.m. Two and a half hours later.
