Letters Home

M. Edium came home from school the one evening last week saying he didn't want to go back to school any more, and preferred to go back to his old day care lady. "She misses me," he explained. Which is probably true, but not really relevant.

A little tag-team questioning from both my wife and me revealed the actual reason: he hadn't been allowed to play with the "letter box." As you may or may not already be aware, depending largely on whether you have a kid in Montessori school, the "letter box" is a collection of wooden letters that the kids can use to spell out words. We didn't know this at the time, however; all we knew was that only four kids were allowed to play at a time, so we just assumed he hadn't got a turn for some reason.

Dropping him off the next day, I checked with a teacher and found out the actual deal -- students are allowed to play with the letter box only if they can actually recognize the sounds they make and spell out words. M. Edium can currently only do the first part. And he doesn't always feel comfortable working on new skills at school until he knows he's going to do well at them.

So we made up his own letter box for home by printing out letters on the printer, gluing the page to a manila folder, and cutting it up and encouraging him to practice here at home. Yes, we're great parents.

Also, we don't want to listen to him complain about not getting to play with the letter box every day for the next few months.
