Kid's Menu

M. Small is curious about new foods. Just not curious enough to try any of them.

He'll see us eating something that looks totally exotic to him and say, "What's that?" And we'll tell him it's pad thai, or an eggroll, or a burrito, or a bagel. Then we'll ask, "You want to try it?" and he'll always say, "No." If it's not corn dogs or chicken nuggets (or, even better, corn dogs and nuggets), he's not interested.

This isn't how we planned it. We had every intention of introducing him to the cuisines of the world at the earliest possible age. Like, as early as considering imported Japanese formula with a brand name like "Strongness Healthy Great Sunflower Youth Meal" or something. It didn't work out that way. And unfortunately, all the baby books seems to advise against, say, octopus sushi as junior's first solid food. It didn't help that he was allergic to carrots the first three years of his life, which even limited the options of what we could serve him out of those little Gerber jars. For instance, did you know that carrots are even in baby lasagna? We were disappointed at the time, but looking back I realize that not getting to eat lasagna with carrots in it isn't exactly the greatest hardship an infant could face.

But I think it's all contributed to his narrow tastes. Fortunately, he does like most fruits, vegetables, and pasta, as well as some forms of bread, so it's not like we have to alternate between two different meals every time we cook for him. It's more like four or five.

Still, I hope it's not too late to help him develop a more eclectic palate. It's a pain in the ass to raise a picky eater. At least that's what my parents always told me.
