It's time to get in shape

That's me in the picture, ya know....Yeah, right.

Anyways, now that here in our area it has finally broken the barrier of good weather--which means consecutive days of more than 70 degrees with sun--I don't really have an excuse to not get out and start turning the bowl of jello that I refer to normally as my stomach into something a little less bulbous. I used to be fit, trim, but that was like...um...a while ago. So, for me and for my kid's sake, it's time to saddle up on the treadmill and get out into nature to make myself a little more presentable and healthy.

With the boys now being 10 and 6, they are both hot and heavy into baseball. Now, I know that baseball is not usually the most strenuous activity/sport out there, but it still takes some running, throwing, and other various things. It was evident that when we did some throwing around a few weeks ago and after hitting and running I almost felt like I was going to throw up and that was just after fielding a few ground balls, I knew that eventually as it became better weather that I needed to really strive to lose some weight.

It will help in terms of discipline actually that we have some different arrangements with seeing the boys; you see, over the past three years since I have been divorced, I have had the pleasure of having the boys every weekend, even though I lived at least an hour away from my ex-wife. We have a great relationship now and it has always been great to have a lot of time with the boys. But now that they are really getting more of their own friends and my ex-wife has remarried with a blended family, we have as of the last few months gone to a more traditional every other weekend schedule with more holidays and other times during the summer available (I still have it MUCH better than the typical non-custodial parent). But of course, the silver lining with not being able to see the boys as much is that when we did see the boys, it meant more times going out to eat and sometimes not being as active--that I could have been.

So I need to really start taking advantage of the off-weekends to working out more and getting myself more in shape to really be much more active during the times that they ARE here. It is certainly not going to be an easy road, but I have to do it--it's hell to be 34 and go up three flights of stairs and be happy that I am not wheezing! I will be highlighting some exercise gadgets for men and dads over the next several days to help me in my cause!
