It Takes a Village

This weekend, my wife and I decided to finally rip the ugly old carpet out of our back bedroom, on the grounds that it was a nice day to dump all the stuff in that room onto the back deck for a few hours. That room also has a convenient door leading outside, which we were able to leave open so we could keep an eye on M. Small while he played in the backyard.

At least in theory. In practice, what happened is that he ended up "helping" our next-door neighbor with some of her yardwork. He got to have fun and feel useful, and we got our project done more quickly than we would have otherwise been able to.

A bit later, while putting off loading everything back onto that room's newly denuded floor, my wife and I did a little yardwork of our own while M. Small "helped" the next-door neighbors on the other side of our house. This is what I love about this kind of weather: everyone's outside, so we get a little parenting backup without even having to ask (although we thanked them, obviously). It's a good thing that the kid's charming enough that the neighbors don't seem to mind.
