Home Early

M. Edium loves going camping, which makes it easier for us. Of course there are still the predictable challenges of managing outdoor living over an extended period of time, most of which involve dropping what you're doing every thirty seconds to chase him away from something sharp, hot, pointy, poisonous, or covered in tire tracks becuase people drive on it.

But I'd have to say this last trip was a success overall. He's getting old enough to start helping with little jobs like gathering sticks and pulling out the tent pegs. Not that he has the attention span to actually complete these jobs, but we're choosing to see his temporary interest as a good sign.

However, he's developed an even more important skill, which is knowing when to tell us that he's had enough. We were planning to come home Sunday morning, but early Saturday afternoon he started making noises about wanting to leave sooner. We realized that with no beach or playground equipment at the campground and and only so many walks you can take, we'd pretty much exhausted our entertainment options for the weekend beyond cooking a couple more meals over propane. And so we called it a day a couple hours later, and on Saturday night we all went to sleep in our own beds, instead of dreading the packing up and driving home the next morning. Now all we have to dread is laundry.

I'm hoping he'll have even more useful camping skills by the time we take our next trip, but since that's only two weeks away I have my doubts.
