Gifting Child

My wife was the one who had the idea of letting M. Edium pick out birthday and Christmas gifts for people, but I have to admit that it is absolute genius.

First of all, kids have cheap taste. At least until they reach the age when they're too old for you to lead them by the hand away from jewelry, electronics, kitchenware, and clothing.

Secondly, they don't have to explain their thought processes. Whenever someone opens a gift from me, I always have that sinking feeling of Oh, God, what was I thinking? The only thing a four-year-old asks himself when someone opens a present from him is, How long until I get to play with it?

So even if you know that the person you're buying for really has their heart set on an expensive new digital helicopter, you can hand over a box of impostor perfume or a model skeleton kit and say, "He picked it out" and the person can't say a thing.

Oh, and my wife also says something about how it helps him understand the joy of gift-giving at an early age. Whereas I have discovered enough joy in vicarious, random gift-giving at a relatively advanced age that I don't even care.
