Getting the Pixar

Getting the Pixar

We've gradually been introducing M. Edium to the Pixar oeuvre. The first movie he saw all the way through was Cars, the first he saw in the theater without a meltdown was Ratatouille, and he's seen Wall-E no less than thrice already, before it's even out on DVD. He saw Toy Story for the first time at my parents house, and we picked up a used copy of Toy Story 2 for fifty cents. We were a bit surprised to learn he had already seen that too.

That leaves A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Monsters, Inc. We tried A Bug's Life several months ago, but seeing his reaction to Hopper we called an early halt. The short film that came with The Incredibles DVD, "Jack-Jack Attack," freaks him the hell out, so we're not about to try the feature, at least until we've seen it ourselves. He's been very into Finding Nemo storybooks lately, and I think he's almost ready for it; last weekend he asked me, "Where's Nemo's mom?" and when I gently told him the truth, he wasn't sad for the entire rest of the day. Last week we watched Monsters, Inc.

When it first started, with that spooky opening in the darkened bedroom, I think he was wondering what the hell we were thinking. But then the tension was released, and all we needed to do was zap the parts with Roz, Waternoose, and the hazmat-suited Child Detection Agency operatives.

My advice to parents who want to get the kids into Pixar? Get the Pixar Shorts collection. It includes every short film from before it was even called Pixar, all the way up to the hilarious "Lifted" that was screened along with Ratatouille. And if you don't care about your kid's relationship with Pixar, get it for yourself.
