Frosty

My wife and I have fond memories of the old Rankin and Bass holiday specials -- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Year Without a Santa Claus, and so on -- so this year we decided to purchase a set for our daughter that included, among others, Frosty the Snowman. She digs snowmen, and she enjoyed Here Comes Peter Cottontail, which we'd discovered last spring at a yard sale, so we figured that Frosty would be the big hit. Also, we're not so keen on showing her Rudolph yet, since the giant yeti (or whatever that thing was) continued to freak me out well into my 20s.

I hadn't realized, though, that in 1992 a Frosty sequel had been set loose into the world. Called simply, Frosty Returns, it's even more horrible than you'd expect a completely unrelated sequel to be. The reviews at IMDb suggest that well into this decade, CBS continued to re-air it each year. I can't imagine why. It's quite possibly one of the worst holiday-related specials ever produced. Terrible jokes, characters that appear to be Peanuts clones with ill-fitting wigs, and a plot that's nearly incomprehensible but has something to do with CFCs and aerosol cans.

And my daughter is watching it right now. In fact, she's watched it every night this week. Because for some reason, she likes it -- a lot. She doesn't ask to watch Frosty the Snowman -- she specifically requests the sequel and becomes quite incensed when we don't oblige her. I realize that she's only 31 months old, but I'm wondering if there's any hope that she'll ever have decent cultural sensibilities. If this is any indication, she's off to a rough start.
