Family Night

Last Thursday was "Family Night" for M. Edium's Montessori school. Most of the kids -- and their parents, obviously -- convened at a park near the school in the evening, for pizza and playing. And, for the parents, networking.

It's an ideal social setting, really. The sign of a successful party is "churn," which is people not getting entrenched in the same areas with the same people all night. When every adult on the edge of the playground has at least one 3-5 year old running around, churn is a given. We've all been stuck with a boring conversational partner at gatherings, but that's not the case at Family Night. Because every few minutes, someone's going to have to wade in and pull their kid off of another kid, or out from under another kid. Keeps things moving.

We met literally dozens of parents this way. And it was an ideal division of labor, because my wife is much better than I am at talking to people and making friends, whereas I am taller and faster than she is and was thus able to quickly dash over when M. Edium needed to be pried off of something high. It's moments like this when you really appreciate being part of a parenting team.
