Election Day

It's been well over a month since I last posted here, a gap that I blame almost entirely on the election that's being held today. Given the fact that my governor is the vice presidential candidate for one of the major parties -- and given my thorough distaste for her record and position on nearly every conceivable issue -- I've been spending an unusual amount of time writing about her for other online venues.

My daughter also deserves a large amount of the blame for my absence. In the past two months, she's decided to make a serious effort to test every possible weak spot in her parents' quest for domestic order. With a new baby on the way and my wife increasingly sidelined by the pregnancy, A. has seized the opportunity to widen her sphere of misbehavior. There's a great line in one of Ian Falconer's Olivia books, something to the effect that "Olivia knows how to wear people out." We repeat that phrase a lot these days...

But A. has been very interested in the US presidential campaign these days. So far, her political views track pretty well with those of her parents. Whenever she sees a picture of John McCain, for example, she asks, "Is John McCain crabby?" Yes, we tell her. Yes he is.

She's also participating in her own special way, serving as a metaphoric warning against voter complacency:
