Eight Is Enough

M. Edium has had several different favorite shows, but right now I think he likes Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends (Noggin, 11:00 a.m. CT M-F) as much as he's ever liked anything.

His mom and I like it okay as well, which is a nice change. I think part of the appeal for all of us is that like my wife and I, Miss Spider and her husband Holley (who clearly didn't object to her keeping her name) have adopted. They've got five spiderlets that they hatched themselves, as well as an adopted dragonfly named Dragon, an adopted beetle named Shimmer, and a hilarious, raspy-voiced bedbug named Bounce, who is all of our favorite.

The most amazing thing is how Miss Spider is always so serene and calm, yet always in control of all eight of her children. Sometimes it's a little hard to believe. I've heard about another family of ten over on another cable channel where apparently chaos and fighting are the order of the day, and those people are even all the same species. Yet these ten bugs live in a hollow tree without it ever devolving into Jon & Kate Plus Ate Each Other..

The idea is to help kids learn about interpersonal relationships, I guess. But really, I wouldn't mind another show that helps kids learn to read, already. Even the four-year-old can't stand the irritating character voices on Word World.
