Commercial Possibilities

The most random things make me think we're doing a good job as parents. Like today, I had lunch with M. and the wife at a hamburger place with TVs hanging up on the wall. As M. and I got set up in a booth, his eye was caught by one of the monitors. "Is that a movie?" he asked in frank wonder.

I followed his gaze, and understood his interest; he was looking at an ad centered around computer-animated characters, and he loves anything remotely Pixar-looking. Unfortunately, this particular ad was for Mucinex, which meant my son was transfixed by the spectacle of talking boogers.

"No, that's a commercial," I had to tell him, and realized that at three and a half years of age, he doesn't know what that is. Which was confirmed when he asked me. I started to explain, but I don't think I did a very good job, because he asked, "Can we get a commercial movie at home?"

So I was gratified by his lack of TV savvy, choosing to interpret that as a sign that he doesn't watch too much of it. As for his wanting to see more commercials, there'll be plenty of those in his future.
