Comic Relief

My earliest memories date back to when I was about M. Small's age, living in Oklahoma City about 35 years ago. My dad would read me (and sometimes my sisters) the Sunday comics every weekend. I don't remember when or why he stopped; maybe it was just something I outgrew, or maybe I got on his nerves by demanding increasingly funny voices and trying to get him to explain the jokes in Mark Trail and Mary Worth.

Still, I decided to start this tradition with M. Small a few weeks ago. My wife didn't really get it at first, especially when I practically had to chase the kid down to get him to sit still for it. But now he brings me the funnies every Sunday and asks me to read them. So I read him Blondie, Peanuts, Beetle Bailey, Family Circus, and so on. The same featrues my dad read to me, in other words. Probably some of the very same strips, in the case of Peanuts.

There are other, newer strips, of course, but he doesn't seem to be able to relate very well to Dilbert or Doonesbury yet. No hurry. And our paper dropped Mark Trail and Mary Worth years ago, so the only joke-free strip I'll need to worry about when the time comes is For Better or for Worse.
