College

With a toddler, it's never too early to begin saving for -- or talking about -- college. As everyone knows, however, toddlers are notoriously contrary and have the ability to disagree with the most sane questions or uncontroversial statements of fact. Yesterday, for example, my wife and I were explaining to A. that her father teaches college and that perhaps one day she will take classes at her dad's school. The following is a rough transcription of the debate that ensued:

Father: Are you going to go to college someday?
Daughter: (pauses, turns defiantly to father) I'm not going to college someday.
Father: (pauses to reflect on her daughter's options) Are you going to go to barber college?
Daughter: (pauses, stares at her wooden spoon) I'm not going to barber college.
Father: Are you going to go to clown college?
Daugher: (long pause followed by expression of delight) Going to clown college!

I have since learned that there are many clown colleges from which my daughter might choose; I have yet to verify whether the 529 College Savings Plan my wife and I have established will cover the tuition.
