Charles

There's another kid in M. Small's school who has the same first name. We've been hearing about him a lot. At first it was just because of the novelty of his being around someone else with the same name. But now we hear a lot about him becuase apparently he is very naughty. He'll tell us about something "Other M." did today and how angry Mr. N. got as a result.

Yes, of course I have read the Shirley Jackson short story "Charles". Every time we hear about Other M. that story pops right into my head, just as it does my wife's.

But the teachers there always claim that he's a total sweetheart whenever we drop him off or pick him up. In fact, one of his teachers said today he's the most polite child in the class. So I'm pretty sure we don't have a Charles situation going on.

At least not until we get home. Perhaps the strain of being on his best behavior all day is beginning to tell on him, becuase there are more and more evenings when we have moments with an "Other M." of our own.
