Can You Hear Me Now

There are lots of things I never expected about being a parent, but the most obscure one has to be the frequency with which the 1980s Pseudo Echo non-hit "Listening" keeps going through my head. The fact that I can only remember the chorus -- and that imperfectly -- doesn't help. It goes something like "something, something, you're not listening…something, something, something…"

Obviously this is a setup for a bit about how M. Edium has achieved the age where he has developed selective deafness. It's kind of alarming to me how frustrated I get when he refuses to listen to what I'm telling him, and I think my wife feels the same way. He'll get into something we don't want him getting into, and we'll tell him not to, and he'll just proceed as though nobody has said anything. It's hardly less frustrating when he tries to argue, like, "I'm just going to use the sprayer nozzle to wash the spice rack" and goes about his clearly forbidden business as though his explanation means that approval is a foregone conclusion.

Is this one of those things my parents were talking about when they said my behavior as a child would come around to bite me in the ass? Because if I had to pick, I think I'd prefer him to like milk as much as I did.
