Building Up

I know it's foolish to try to project what a three-and-a-half-year-old is going to grow up to be based on what he likes to do. But if Ihad to, I'd say mine is going to be an architect.

Most of his toys run on batteries, but the ones he keeps coming back to is a simple set of wooden blocks that he uses to make garages, hangars, fire stations, ziggurats, DMVs, and any other structure you care to imagine. And if you give him some pillows, couch cushions, blankets, and an expanse of floor or bed, he's going to have a house, fort, or nest standing there in a matter of minutes, with himself snuggled inside.

I shared my theory with my wife, and she had her doubts. "Maybe he'll be an architect in the Mike Brady sense," she said, meaning that he tends to always build his little structures on a similar model. I added that it was also a good analogy becuase, like Mike Brady, he always ends up having to crawl out of it after it's collapsed on top of him.

He, of course, thinks he's going to be an astronaut. But do we ever see him flying in a rocket or drifting around in zero gravity? We do not.
