Breathe Deep

M. Edium has a bit of asthma that gets inflamed when he gets sick. When this happens, we need to sit him down for ten-minute sessions with his albuterol nebulizer, which puts out little puffs of atomized medicine to help relieve his little lungs. The first time he had to try it out was in a doctor's office, when he was two. The nurse told us that most little kids hate it, and it can be a struggle to keep them from squirming away from it. I'm glad to say that M. Edium doesn't have this problem. In fact, he puts the nozzle right into his mouth and sucks on it like a hookah.

For the first five or six minutes that is. Then he gets bored, at which point we have to resort to bribes, blackmail, and physical restraint to get him through the last few minutes of the treatment. Or other means.

For instance, last week I was giving him his "neb" on our bed. When he got tired of it, he wriggled under the covers and pulled them over his head. Now, I could have wasted time and probably spilled some medicine fighting him back out of there, but all I did was put the nozzle under the blankets with him. He thought he was getting away with escaping, when in fact he was effectively trapping himself inside a concentrated albuterol tent.

I've found myself adapting skills from my previous life to ft the demands of parenting before. I never thought the Dutch Oven would be one of them.
