Birth Mom

M. Small's birth mom came over for a visit this evening, and it was a lovely time as always. I don't think I've mentioned this here before, but we have an open adoption. Wide open.

When we first met with the birth parents almost four years ago, they didn't ask for much in the way of contact. Semi-annual visits and occasional pictures, if I remember correctly. I'm glad to say that my wife and I pushed for quite a bit more than that. When my wife said they could park their car across the street and live in it, I don't think she was entirely joking.

I can't imagine having as little contact with M.'s birth family as they originally requested. It would be a serious curtailment. If we go more than a few weeks without seeing M.'s birth mom, he starts missing her and asking about her. He knows who she is, at least to the extent that a three-year-old's understanding of reproduction allows. We've been telling him his story since he was only a few days old. We have every reason to believe that this helps him know who he is.
