Being Thankful...every day!

I know that Thanksgiving comes in November, and I know it’s usually one of those times where it takes a holiday to realize what things we have in our life and really how idiotic we are with all of our sweating of the small stuff. But there was a situation this last weekend that occurred which made me realize that being thankful all of the time is what can make me not only a better dad, but a better person.

Our six year old, Jonathan, has had quite the time lately with being appreciative of things that he is given or things we do. It even turned into a scenario on the way back from fireworks on the Fourth of July because of how indignant he was that he ended up in his room “thinking about it” and had to go immediately to bed.

Children are sponges, there’s no doubt about that. My 10 year old, a lot of times, is a mini-me, and that can be good, and sometimes REALLY bad. But with the situation of being grateful, I have to put some onus on myself to be a good role model for the boys to really start being overly appreciative about things even as simple as people being courteous about things, meals, manners, and then also show THEM appreciation for different things that I just “expect” of them now. I feel that the more that I can put the effort forth, things should gradually make their way towards the direction that we feel that both of the boys should be acting like in terms of being thankful.
