Baby of the Family

At my father-in-law's retirement party last week, M. Edium was there along with all five of his young cousins on that side of the family. His oldest cousin just turned eight, and M. Edium is the youngest at a month shy of four. Eventually most of the kids ended up playing several different variants of tag in the wide hallway outside the party room. M. Edium only played one variant: one he made up himself, where he simply clamped his arms around one of his cousins. Which I thought was pretty funny, but that cousin didn't.

Eventually the cousin got angrier and angrier, and M. Edium started feeling rejected. He's always been the youngest of his cousins, and I wonder if he hasn't been waiting to catch up with them or maybe even pass them. It looks like he's going to stay the youngest cousin on his mom's side forever.

But maybe one day my sisters will have kids, and he'll always be the oldest on that side. Which I'm sure he'll enjoy, until the day he's playing tag and he can't run because his youngest relative has clamped himself to him.
